Stewart Island
Stewart Island is located in the Southland region and is the southernmost and smallest island of the three main islands of New Zealand. Just 30km from the South Island, this small island is a perfect retreat for those seeking peace and quiet. Access to the island is by 20 minute flight or by a one-hour ferry ride (weather permitting).
Roughly 85% of Stewart Island forms part of New Zealand's newest national park, Rakiura National Park. Rakiura is the Maori name for Stewart Island and translates as 'the Land of Glowing Skies', mostly likely in reference to Aurora Australis, the Southern Lights. Many of the island’s residents are direct descendants of whalers and early Rakiura Maori. more
Attractions and activities on the island include fishing, sea kayaking, visits to the seal colonies and shag rookeries of Ulva Island, snorkelling and diving.
Stewart Island is particularly popular, however, with hikers and bird watchers. The island has over 245 km of walking tracks – all of which can be accessed from Halfmoon Bay – including the Great Walk, the Rakiura Track. Accommodation is limited with some lodges, holiday homes, bed and breakfasts and self-catering options available. Hikers on the Rakiura Track Great Walk are accommodated in huts, but tents can be useful.
Stewart Island is a haven for native bird life and the only place in New Zealand where you can readily see kiwi in their natural habitat.
