Cromwell is a small rural town located in the centre of the South Island, in the Otago region, inland from Dunedin City.

Cromwell is nestled between State Highway 6 and State Highway 8. Nearby towns are at Bannockburn, Lowburn, Tarras, and Ripponvale.

Named after Oliver Cromwell, the town of Cromwell was once sited at the confluence of the Clutha River and Kawarau River. In the 1990s, Clyde Dam was built and the river confluence was drowned, along with the old town centre. Much of the old Cromwell town was rebuilt on higher ground, along with many new buildings.

Known as the "Fruit Bowl of the South" due to its hot dry climate which is ideal for growing stone fruits, Cromwell is a popular summer holiday destination.

Cromwell is ideally located for easy day trips to all areas of Central Otago. It is a convenient and affordable base for skiing the winter ski fields of The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Treble Cone, Cardrona, and Waiorau Snow Farm.
