Kawau Island
Kawau Island is a stunning island in the Hauraki Gulf a mere 1.4 kilometres from the main land and about 40 kilometres from Auckland. One of the main attractions on the island is the Mansion House in the Kawau Island Historic Reserve. The island has a small resident population of around 70 people of whom most have direct access to the sea with private wharves from their front door steps. more
Kawau Island has a large wallaby population of several species including tammar, Parma, swamp and brush-tailed rock-wallabies. With only two short roads servicing the small settlements of Schoolhouse Bay and South Cove, the island is ideal for walking and exploring on foot or by boat.
