Waimangu, Waiotapu, Waikite Attractions and Activities
Waimangu, Waiotapu, and Waikite are home to three large and well known geothermal areas that occur in the central part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Classified as protected by Waikato Regional Council, Waimangu and Waiotapu contain probably the finest, easily-accessible thermal discharge features still in existence in New Zealand. The Te Ara Ahi cycle trail passes through the area, highlighting the thermal wonderland of steaming vents, bubbling mud pools and spectacular geysers. On the Te Manaroa Spring Walkway and Eco-Trail, you'll also find the largest single source of boiling water in New Zealand.
